Answers:

1. What does "Royalty Free" mean?

A Royalty free (RF) designation means that purchaser has bought the right to reproduce the image as many times and in as many ways as they like (with minimal restrictions and limitations).

2. What does "Rights Managed" mean?

Rights-managed products are designated by an (RM) under the image and are purchased for a specific, clearly defined use with the price being determined by the scope of that use: The more substantial the intended use of the photo, the higher the fee. And the image may not be used in any way that is not agreed to and invoiced for.

3. Why do I pay more for a "Rights Managed" image?

Rights Managed images are by definition more restricted in their use. They will be distributed for only short periods of time and in limited situations. A premium is paid for the smaller likelihood of having that image used by a competitor.

4. Can I download an image for comping purposes without being charged?

Yes, simply place cursor over image and then click and hold (Mac users on Netscape), control + click and hold (Mac users on Internet Explorer) or right click (PC users) and choose, “save this image as”, or "download image to disk". Make sure to rename the image "yourfilename.jpg" when prompted. You may rename the image anything you want or use our image ID number for future reference. The Image ID number may be found towards the top of the page, immediately below the search bar.

7. What happens if I try to download and image and it doesn’t work?

. You have up to 7 days to repeatedly download an image once purchased. If after several attempts you are still not successful, please contact our support staff for help. If that yields no better results then it is possible to have the image(s) burned to CD and overnighted to your location (P&H fees apply).

9. What are my options if I have a slow Internet connection?

If your internet connection is slow, or if buying a large volume of images would make downloading cumbersome, a CD can be burned and overnighted to you. P&H fees will be waived if over 5 images are purchased at one time. Please contact Starkphoto for further details.

10. How does a keyword search work?

Our search engine is simple to use but powerful and efficient as well. Simply type in a keyword and use the filter options to narrow your search. You may filter to match one of three choices: 1) all images, 2) just those that are Royalty Free, or 3) those that are Rights Managed. You may also use the “match any”, or “match all” filters when using two or more search words to help you zero in on your target. “Match Any” is like saying “find me an image whose keywords contain either of these words, and “Match All” is like saying “find me an image whose keywords contain both of these words”.

For example, typing in red vegetable (no commas, quotation marks, or plus signs necessary) using the “match any” filter would return all those images that have either red or vegetable in its keywords list. Using the “match all” filter would return only those images that contain both red and vegetable in its keywords list (like a tomato). Adding another search word helps to narrow the choices even further. So, for example, typing red vegetable horizontal using the “Match All” filter limits the matches to only those images that contain red vegetables that were photographed in a horizontal orientation.

You can also search for an image by typing in its Image ID number, if you made a note of that number in a previous search.

15. Is it possible to get an image I am interested in scanned to a larger size than is available on this site?

It is possible. If the image was originally captured as a transparency then we can rescan the film at a higher resolution. If the image was originally captured with a digital camera then this is not an option. It may be possible to access the original raw formatted file, and utilizing 16 bit color depth (so as to retain maximum quality) rez up the image, but this would still involve interpolation of data and possible loss of quality. Please contact Starkphoto.com for further details.

16. Is it possible to obtain an image in a tiff format rather than in a jpeg format?

Yes. Although we strive to maintain the highest quality standards we recognize that jpeg compression may not be acceptable for your needs. All images are archived as uncompressed tiffs and are available on CD if so desired. Contact our support staff and they will be happy to discuss this option with you.
